50 Contemporary Women Artists

John Gosslee & Heather Zises, Editors
Foreword by Elizabeth Sackler

50 Contemporary Women Artists is a multi-award-winning publication about contemporary women artists (of which five are MacArthur Fellows) and architects who have made groundbreaking contributions in their respective fields. The book promotes women in an ongoing dialogue through the exploration of their work and process and offers a fresh perspective on feminism and notions of cultural power. Pluralistic in its approach, the survey also includes a foreword by Elizabeth Sackler, founder of the Center for Feminist Art at the Brooklyn Museum. The book is now available at world class institutions like MoMA, Brooklyn Museum, The Hirshhorn and ICA Boston and has also been acquired by distinguished universities and higher education programs for their library collections like School of Visual Art, Hunter College and Christie’s Education.

I launched this book project with co-editor John Gosslee in 2015. The idea came from a special Women’s Edition that John’s magazine Fjords Review ran in 2014 where I served as guest curator. The edition did so well that it begged the question as to why there were no books about contemporary women artists on the market, so this was our attempt to fill that void.
